This summer I decided to participate in a collaborative art project going on in Milwaukee, expected to be shown in September.

I was very excited by the prospect of being able to mix my style and ideas with another artist, but I realized early on it would be very difficult to actually work with someone in Milwaukee while I spent the entire summer in Texas. Fortunately, one of my friends (and fellow 2011 MIAD Photography graduate,) Andrea Payne, was planning on attending the first meeting for this group's project. As we both work primarily digitally, we decided we could work together by sending files back and forth, eliminating the problem my distance posed.

I am posting a couple of images that have come from this collaboration so far. These images are not finished products, and there are still more files going through the working process we have set up. Any and all feedback would be appreciated!

I have recently become interested in photographing mirrors. (Well, I have always been interested in it, but not seriously before.) I've created three mirror portraits since the year began and hope to continue in this vein to create a complete series. Two are self portraits, but I think the future images will be of other people. It depends on when inspiration hits and who is available; I might end up doing more self portraits.

The mirror images (were not necessarily inspired by but) are of similar tone and meaning as the poem "Mirror" by Sylvia Plath, seen below:

I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see, I swallow immediately.
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike
I am not cruel, only truthful –
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.

Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me.
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

Passage from my press release for thesis, relevant to most my work:

"The photography of Georgia Lloyd seen in the series “Passage” explores ideas of the beauty and pain inherent within the natural and “human” world. There is a strong concentration on themes of fragility vs. strength, the passage of time, death/rebirth and the cyclical nature present in the ebb and flow of life."

Last night the Photography Seniors at MIAD put on a silent auction. This was done to raise money for the publication project we started in the beginning of the school year. For those who don't know, this year will be the first that a publication like this will be released from a MIAD major, and it was an entirely student-created project. That's right, we are doing this outside of our normal schoolwork, thesis projects, social lives, and jobs. :)

The book will have a two page spread of images for each Photo-Senior and will be sold during the thesis show. The publication will also be available for purchase through our website. We have been working very hard on this project, whether that be through raising money, organizing photos and making the actual book, or helping create a website for people to purchase the book from.

You can visit the website here, though it is currently still under construction. Once the publication's production has been finalized, purchasing will be available.

The silent auction was supplied by print donations (two from each of the photo-seniors) and MIAD alumni. It ran from 6PM to 9PM, at which point bidding was stopped. There was also a print raffle. Tickets were sold for $2.00, and the winners announced at 9:15PM. As was expected, most people came to bid mid- to end- auction.

I'm happy to report that the auction was a large success. I'd be lying if I said I expected so many prints to sell, but almost all of them were bid on. There were 6-7 prints that didn't sell out of 41 that were hung. Many of the prints started a bidding war, and I'm flattered to be able to say one of my prints had nine bids.

The installation of the sale was rather hectic. It was about a three day job that ended up having to be rushed the night before and the morning of the opening. I think we did pretty well for all our restrictions. I am grateful to all of the seniors for their donations and help, and especially to Aryn Kresol, Aimee Keil, Rose Tarman, and Tom Owens (sorry if I missed someone!) for their outstanding organization and help putting the show together.

This is the artist statement I have created for my final presentation in my photography class:

Humans must be one of the most cursed species - able to understand life to such a degree that they are just out of reach of the most important question. The significance of our short individual experiences of living seem of relative unimportance, especially when considering the vast knowledge we have accumulated thus far about life, the world, and the universe. None of it satisfies knowing the real meaning behind our existence.

I often ponder this line of thought, however much I try to distract myself from these troubling ideas. I end up constantly seeking an answer to my purpose but am usually left with a less coherent understanding than before. The paradoxical nature of this understanding leads me to be confused but enlightened, and somehow still truly unaware despite the days and days of time I dedicate to this questioning.

The progression of work seen here mirrors my perspective during this mental journey. During my start of distorted trees, I knew I was searching for something, but I had not yet become aware of what it was (or perhaps I was not willing to admit what thoughts really lead to my images.) The work shifted to darkness, reflecting my fears, doubts, and inhibitions in my current state of being. I eventually became more comfortable expressing a sense of blind exploration, seen by the arrival of fog and greater distortion on the images. I was hoping they would convey a sense of being lost, yet still feeling lead to a specific point, the light.

The following images left the darkness, making them in a sense less full of fear and more about the distorted vision. The clouded atmosphere hazing over the trees was distinct enough to get a sense of the subject matter, but unclear to the point that the viewer could not see the trees in their actual form. This seemed a good metaphor for experience of asking and pondering the “big questions.” So often I feel I have a vague grasp of an answer, (if there really is such a thing,) but it easily slips through my fingers as an intangible concept.

The last image in the progression was visually a large jump from my previous work, yet a concise conclusion to the work of this semester in terms of ideas. It embodies very literally the position I am in during my contemplative periods. I am seen surrounded by light, metaphor for knowledge, that is so intense I cannot actually see it despite looking straight into its depths.

A rather literal interpretation of what I've been doing all semester long with my tree work, though maybe this is not immediately apparent. I toyed with this style of "portraiture" (if you can even call this that) when I was a sophomore in high school. A big jump for me now, since I haven't been shooting people for my personal work at all the past year or so.

During my freshman and sophomore years at MIAD, I felt like I had really transcended the photos I was making in high school. However, the more I am figuring out my work these past two semesters, the more I am seeing how it has remained consistent all along. I am getting better in terms of technique, but the issues I was considering never changed.

How can it be that of all the schools of thought, not one seems to have acceptable answers to me? Is it true that nihilism is characteristic of the modern age? What wrong turn did religion take, to have what were once its followers finding no refuge within its confines nor outside of them?

I have so many questions, but the answers are enigmatically elusive. I struggle with a sense of purpose, perhaps as a pathetic attempt to find the knowledge that will prevent me from having a crisis of existence.

What is it like to be in this place? It is uncomfortable; it is blinding. It is like facing the sun but having to squint. I know what is there, but actually seeing it, accepting it, would damage me. The more I try to open my eyes, the brighter the light becomes; the closer the truth comes, the more I cannot see. I am caught between wanting to accept what the thing I know exists looks like, and dreading what will be revealed to me.

I very distantly see the happenings in my life, but it’s difficult to understand if I am reacting to them in the right way. My mind becomes clouded with anxiety when I wonder if I am progressing, or just traveling further down the same barren path.

The trees are now bare, waiting for light and warmth to blossom again. I can’t help but feel a kinship with my subjects, desiring the same in order to become who I was before.

I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. Artist Statement

Here is the artist statement for the series of photographs shown in my last entry. (All photographs in the series are not shown, and I consider this series to be unfinished.)

The idea of fate can provoke seemingly contradictory feelings of fear, hope, and longing…

I have been walking a straight path for a long time. Any shift in this path seemed a faraway destination, but inevitably and quite unexpectedly I reached a fork in the road. There is no exit, no backpedaling, and the place I stand is paved with tension. I now contemplate what each channel offers, but I am immobilized by my doubt, optimism, and resulting indecision.

Branches have always seemed representative of life to me; their new growths and thick bases seem like pathways – what was chosen, and what could have been. Though I know my decision has to be made, my vision is clouded. These branches are distorted, dimly cast with the conflicting emotional hazes I shift in and out of.
